Happy Birthday Booger

It's been a busy couple of weeks with both mine and Kylie's training ramping up as well as things getting busier at the rowing club.

In the last post I was gearing up for the always not enjoyable FTP test on the bike. It actually went pretty well on results basis with my FTP going up substantially since the last one I did. In terms of how it felt? Terrible. Also not super intelligent on my part was timing it so I had about 45min to shower and get to work after it. May have taken the brain a few extra minutes to switch on to coaching for that practice. Also I think I spent equal time eating and coaching. Good times.

It has now been just over 2 years since Beauden graced us with his presence, the fact that he arrived before the epidural could take hold is in hindsight ominous foreshadowing. This is the second year in a row with no birthday party for Beauden. Which is truly unfortunate as there are only so many birthday parties that you get before the kids has an opinion and wants their own friends there and other lame things like that. Since the restrictions were slightly more relaxed this year we were able to spend time with my parents and Kylie's parents for his birthday which was a massive upgrade on the zoom only from last year. The past 2 years with Booger have been quite a ride that has kept the entire family on our toes.

I can't stay mad at that face! Love you little Booger bear.

After a ramp up in volume in the training plan that I oh so intelligently packed into less days than planned so my long weekend was more restful we headed down to the cabin for Easter.

Yah I was a little tired after that.

Now my last post included some nice balanced meals to fuel the workouts. To counteract that here is a large chuck of Pork I smoked on the Weber BBQ at down at the cabin.

I paired this with beer and red wine. Health food at it's finest?

I did manage to get a couple of runs in while at the cabin. The first was to purely take back the one record for the one and only Strava running segment on the island which I had recently lost.

ree

I ended up stopping short of the end point on my first run. This meant I obviously had to attempt it again the next day. Yes I am at that level of pettiness/competitiveness.

I joined Kylie for her planned 12km run through next day.

ree

We may look like we have having fun but 12km on Ruxton is not super enjoyable as there is not a whole lot of flat trails and a whole bunch sharp up and down hills.

More importantly I managed to retake my Crown. Hopefully it doesn't get beaten anytime soon as I was ready to 🤮🤮🤮 at the top of it.

Kylie doing her longest run since the kids were born is much more impressive that my segment. On top of that we had to chase down Adi and her friend from the neighbors up and down the trails.

ree

They are pure trouble together.

Side note: Apparently running and wine are a bad combo to get a good recovery on the Whoop.

😬😬😬

Not to be forgotten Adi started soccer for the first time this week!

ree

She was so excited. She even has cleates and shin pads and a jersey! If you are 4 these are VERY exciting things. Considering most of Adi's activities so far have been general movement skills (gymnastics and a bit of dance) she did surprisingly well dealing with a ball. On the negative side she was fairly insufferable telling her brother that he was too little to play soccer. I thought it was funny. I am looking forward to more days at the field as I grew up playing soccer and rugby and really enjoyed it no matter how hard it rained. Kylie is less excited for the rainy days.

In terms of training the bike sessions have started to get longer but I have managed to get outside for those ones. Probably a good thing as I am still not mentally recovered from the 6hr epic ride on the trainer. One new element that came in this week was running directly off the bike. The training plan called for a 15min run after a 2.5 hour ride. I made a quick transition and got straight into it. It felt sooooooooooo slow. After about 10min my legs started to settle in and it felt a little better for the last bit. Once I finished it I realized I had been running at a sub 5min per km pace. I don't run that fast like ever. Going to have to work on pacing things a bit I think...

That seems like a next year problem

DBS!
